Super Tuscan is a misleading term because there’s no technical definition. If you had to put your money on what a Super Tuscan is, it’s most likely a blend made from Bordeaux grapes and/or Syrah. Regarded as a Super Tuscan, Castello del Terriccio is owned by Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano and sprawls 1,000 hectares, making it the largest privately owned estate in Tuscany. Located just north of Bolgheri, the moderating effects of the Tyrrhenian Sea breed a spectacular paradise of micro-climates and wildlife. Vittorio is leading Terriccio into a new era, one in which elegance and less oak are supreme. Fermentations are longer and slower, bigger barrels have replaced smaller ones,and the wines rest in concrete before bottling. Tassinaia is an excellent introduction to Vittorio’s progress. A classic Super Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the wine shows off layers of tart and ripe berries, then on the palate the “Macchia” of the Mediterranean flips the switch with wild herbs, purple spice, and sunbaked earth. An olive-like salinity lifts the finish, and the tannins are tucked-in, slim-fit. An incredible bargain in the Super Tuscan world, keep Tassinaia in your drinking pocket.~Allegra A
