California Proposition 65 Warning
California Proposition 65
Proposition 65 is a California law that requires businesses to give a clear warning before exposing people to chemicals the state lists as causing cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. It applies to a very wide range of products, including glass bottles, metal closures, printed labels, inks and adhesives.
Why a bottle can carry a warning
Trace amounts of lead and cadmium can be present in the glass, enamels, crystal or decorative coatings of some bottles, and in the linings and seals of some closures. Proposition 65 sets exposure thresholds far below the levels at which these materials would be considered harmful in ordinary use, so a warning can be required even where the exposure is very small. Similar notices appear on thousands of ordinary items sold in California.
Notice wording
Where a warning is required, the notice used on shipments follows the standard short form: WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov. The operator must confirm the exact notice required for each product, and any product-specific warning, before this store accepts live orders.
What the warning does not mean
A Proposition 65 notice is not a finding that a product is unsafe, and it says nothing about the drink inside the bottle. It is a disclosure requirement about chemical exposure, and it does not replace any other safety information. Handle and store bottles as you would any glass container, keep them out of reach of children, and recycle broken glass carefully.
