Alcohol Warning and Disclaimer

Federal warning

The following warning appears on alcohol containers sold in the United States and is reproduced here word for word:

GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.

What it means in practice

  • No alcohol during pregnancy. There is no established safe amount.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery after drinking. Alcohol impairs reaction time and judgement well before a person feels drunk.
  • Alcohol can interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Ask a pharmacist or a doctor.
  • Alcohol affects people differently according to body weight, food intake, medication and general health.

Responsible drinking

Space drinks with water and food, and keep track of what you have actually poured, because a 46% spirit served neat in a large glass is considerably more than a standard drink. Do not drink and drive, and do not let a guest drive after drinking. If you are worried about your own drinking or someone else’s, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free and confidential on 1-800-662-4357, every day of the year.

Some states require an additional warning on the container or on a delivery notice, and the wording differs from state to state. The operator must supply any state-specific notice text before this store accepts live orders. This page is general information and is not medical advice.
